Dear God, give me strength

I was hoping to publish my annual pre-Ramadhan post (see 2014, 2015, 2016 & 2017) with tricks and tips on spending a positive Ramadhan. However, just a week ago, my cousin (a kind soul and a close friend) passed away. So before I launch myself further, I would like to ask that, this Ramadhan, you keep him, me and our families and friends in your thoughts and prayers.

To God we belong and to Him is our return [Inna lillahi wa inna ilayhi raji’un]

I can’t organize my thought enough for a brand new list, but here are my tried and true tips for Ramadhan:

  • Set spiritual goals (e.g., read entire Qu’ran, memorize a chapter [surah], etc)
  • Reach out to various mosques & communities for breaking the fast [iftaar] meals (e.g., university Muslim Student Associations, Sunni, Shia, Sufi mosques, convert groups, etc)
  • Get together with Muslim and non-Muslim friends for meals or just to pass time
  • Be gentle with yourself
  • Track your progress

I feel rather off track this Ramadhan but thanks to early planning, I already have a Qu’ran and a Ramadhan tracker set up in my bullet journal:

I’ve not yet decided on a chapter [surah] to memorize, but please leave your suggestions in the comments.

I want to visit the local mosque often, God willing [inshaAllah] and hope to meet with friends often, again God willing [inshaAllah].

But mostly, this year, I will focus on being gentle with myself, keeping my expectations low and restore my strength through faith [imaan].

Dear God, give me strength.
